From Nazi Germany to the Civil Rights Movement and the pioneering establishment of legal aid in Appalachia, the extraordinary story of John and Jean Rosenberg reminds us that justice begins with ordinary people who choose to act.

Imagine a child forced to flee Nazi Germany.
Imagine that same child growing up to help defend voting rights in Mississippi during the Civil Rights Movement.
Imagine then choosing to move into the Appalachian coalfields, fighting alongside families struggling to protect their homes, land, and dignity.
That child was John Rosenberg.
Stumbling Stones is John’s extraordinary true story of a refugee who became a civil rights attorney, legal aid pioneer, community advocate, and champion for justice.
Through a powerful one-man theatrical performance by acclaimed actor Jeff Sherr, audiences journey through the defining moments of John’s life, from the rise of antisemitism in Europe, to the Civil Rights era in the United States, to the struggle for economic justice in Appalachia.
Jean Rosenberg, John’s wife, is at the center of the story. Her commitment to families, education, healthcare, and community building demonstrates that justice happens not only in courtrooms but also in neighborhoods, schools, and homes.
Following the performance, the audience will have the rare opportunity to hear directly from John and Jean Rosenberg, who are planning to attend the event and participate in a live discussion and audience Q&A.
This evening offers more than entertainment.

About the playwright and performer
Jeff Sherr is a highly respected public defense veteran with over 25 years of experience training public defense staff nationwide. Known as the “trainer of trainers,” he has mentored countless public defense training directors, presenters, and small group coaches across the country. Jeff’s expertise is sought after, having delivered in-person training in over 40 states and taught for prestigious programs such as the National Criminal Defense College, Gideon’s Promise, and Harvard Trial Advocacy Workshop. He formerly served as the training director for both the National Association for Public Defense and the Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy.
Actor/Improvisor
Jeff is a seasoned performer with over 50 years of stage experience. He’s been with Central Kentucky Improv since 1996, serving as both a performer and technical director. His notable stage credits include Scott Connor in American Son, Tom Joad in The Grapes of Wrath and Prospero in The Tempest. Jeff holds a BA in Theatre from the University of Kansas and trained with the National Shakespeare Conservatory.

Will I receive physical tickets in the mail?
Physical tickets will not be mailed to attendees. Your registration information will be available at the Welcome Table when you arrive at the event.
What are the parking options at The Baldwin School?
Parking is available on campus. The event is in Buildings 9 and 10. Enter from Montgomery Avenue or Morris Avenue, and Baldwin staff will help direct you. Campus map: baldwinschool.org/campus-life/map-and-transportation.
Is the event accessible by public transportation?
Yes. The Baldwin School is across the street from SEPTA’s Bryn Mawr Station (Paoli/Thorndale Line) and is also accessible via SEPTA Bus 105. Visit septa.org for schedules and route information.
Is the venue accessible for guests with limited mobility?
Yes. Accessible parking is available on campus, with step-free entrances, automatic doors, and ramp access near event spaces. Dedicated wheelchair seating, companion seating, and fully ADA-accessible restrooms are also available.
What is the attire for the event?
We want everyone to feel comfortable and welcome. Some attendees may join us directly from work, while others may choose to dress up a bit more or keep it more casual. Please come in whatever feels appropriate and comfortable for you.
What food and refreshments will be served at the reception?
Light appetizers and non-alcoholic beverages will be provided. We have tried to include options for some common dietary preferences, such as vegetarian choices, but we cannot guarantee that all dietary needs or restrictions can be accommodated. If you have specific concerns, email vstarr@lasp.org.
